The fifth season begins as things are finally beginning to improve, but these changes made come are too little, too late for Ava because the physical, emotional, and mental damage to her has already been done. Ava was disability-shamed by a maintenance guy (identified as Brandon Howell) not seen in the episode, and even drove Ava to drink more than usual. Ava has not hit rock bottom, but the window screens in her living room are finally replaced after six months–a job that should have taken a week or two at most.
